blue moon: saw me standing alone

One of the all-time favorite flicks that I share with my sister Hope is Selena's life story. We would sing "Dreaming of You" as though there were no tomorrows. As siblings, we love to share our common interests with each other, just as Selena and her brothers. Aside from its tragic end, I have always appreciated Selena's version of "Blue Moon/We Belong Together" and searched for Vidal Brothers' version of it. The melody is soothing. Makes me wonder how it is like to see the moon turning blue. What really is "Blue Moon" to me, anyway?

I was on my way to work late morning on the last day of the year. On my mobile radio, the news said that it is going to be blue moon tonight. A rare occurrence of time and nature...and on a New Year's eve! Spending the countdown of 2010 with my cousin in the half empty apartment building, its quite a treat to have something to look forward to, somehow.

Our great grandma said, that whoever you are with when the blue moon rises will be the one that you will spend the rest of your life with. Perhaps, not literally though. (Here I go again, justifying the distance ;-)) She might mean that, the person you have in your heart on a blue moon is the person you will be with forerver. For some, this is one of those things that I have in my superstition's box.

Blue moon is a term that people from long ago have coined, not because the moon changes it color from pale yellow light to blue on a particular night, or a result of some ancient voodoo or something to be scared of. Instead, it is the appearance of two full moons in a month. Usually, there is only one, and it used to happen only once every 19 years. Therefore, in one lifetime, one could only witness a few.

There is no blue moon to occur in the next three years. The next spectacle happens to be on my birthday, August 2, 2010 and August 31, 2010. From then on, there won't be any until July 2, 2015 and July 31, 2015. For as long as I can lift my head and see the sky on those triumphant nights, I will see it.

I feel just lucky to know that I can see it up above the sky, and keep in my heart a love of my own.

“…Blue moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer
For someone I really could care for
And then it suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms could ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, please adore me
And when I looked the moon had turned to gold…”
